Black women are four times more likely to die during or up to one year after pregnancy than white women and Asian and mixed-race women are twice as likely. Stillbirth rates in babies of black and black British ethnicity were more than twice those for white babies and neonatal mortality rates were 43% higher. For Asian and Asian British babies, stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates were around 60% higher than for white babies for both groups (birthrights.org).
To tackle these inequalities, we are working with the NHS to share stories from the community about their experiences during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postnatal period within the last two years. Our friendly volunteers will support you in sharing your experience in your own words so that your voice can be heard by key decision makers in the NHS and encourage change.

​Our volunteers are based in Dartford, Gravesend and Swanley and can speak to you on the phone or in a community setting of your choice, such as a cafe.

Become a volunteer

We are looking for volunteers who are Black, Asian or other ethnic minority living in Dartford, Gravesend or Swanley to help collect stories from women in their community and to share information about maternity services. This role is perfect for someone who wants to make a difference and who is passionate about women’s health. You will need to have good communication skills, but all other training will be provided. You can support women in your community with a time commitment of as little as one hour per week. Tasks might include sharing leaflets at baby groups, talking to women about their experiences or putting up posters in your community.
